The 10th China - South Asia Business Forum

The 10th China - South Asia Business Forum, jointly sponsored by China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry and People's Government of Yunnan Province was held on June 12, 2015 in Kunming city of China.

The Forum, which is acting as the important platform for economic and trade cooperation between China and South Asian countries, has been successfully held for 9 sessions. This year the Forum focused on the theme of "Promote the construction of Silk Road Economic Belt; accelerate the pace of business cooperation", The forum was inaugurated by H.E. Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoon, President of the Republic of Maldives who stated that the initiative to jointly build the Belt and Road, embracing the trend toward a multipolar world, economic globalization, cultural diversity and greater IT application, is designed to uphold the global free trade regime and the open world economy in the spirit of regional cooperation. He was of the opinion that The Belt and Road Initiative culminated from the understanding that China’s economy, which was the largest in the world, is connected with that of the rest of the world.

H.E. General ( Rtd.) V.K. Singh, State Minister for External Affairs of India, H.E  Mr. Sunil Bahadur Thapa, Minister of Commerce and Supplies, Nepal. H.E Mr. Rishad Badihuddin, Minister for Commerce & Industry Sri Lanka, H.E Mr. Yu Ping, Vice Chairman of CCPIT, H.E Mr. Luo Zhengfu, Chairman of Chinese Peoples Political Consultative Conference of Yunnan Province and Mr. Li Dongsheng CEO, TCL Group addressed the forum.

Mr. Vikramjit Singh Sahney, Immediate Past President and Chair of Advisory Council who led SAARC CCI in his keynote address termed silk belt as road of development for all those countries and regions across Asia, Persia and Mediterranean sea and urged upon the nations of South Asia to investment in infrastructure development. He was of the opinion that China and South together formed over 40% of the world population and had lot of complementarities, which could help brining two great civilisations closer together.  The inaugural session of the forum was moderated by Mr. Iqbal Tabish, Secretary General, SAARC CCI.

National leaders, head officials of government, leaders of chambers and also famous entrepreneurs from both China and South Asian countries addressed the technical session chaired by Mr. Macky Hashim, former President of SAARC CCI from Sri Lanka. To engage women entrepreneurs in China-South Asia cooperation mechanism, a special roundtable for women was also organised. Mrs. Shaista Pervaiz Malik, Chairperson SAARC CCI Women Entrepreneurs Council delivered key note address. Mrs. Monowara Hakim Ali, Vice President of SAARC CCI from Bangladesh also addressed the session.

CSABF is a cooperation mechanism, which was established for regional economic cooperation between Chinese and SAARC industrial and commercial circles in 2005 in the context of ever-increasing mutual trust in politic affairs and continuous economic cooperation between China and South Asian countries under the aegis of CCPIT Yunnan Sub-Council and SAARC CCI.
