SAARC CCI Delegation Calls on H.E Mr. Ahmed Nazeer, Secretary General, Maldives Association of Tourism Industry

SAARC CCI Delegation led by Mr. Suraj Vaidya, President, SAARC CCI Call-on Mr. H.E. Ahmed Nazeer, Secretary General, Maldives Association of Tourism Industry in his good office in Male, Maldives on 2nd June, 2016.  The meeting was facilitated by SAARC CCI former Snr. Vice President, Mr. Ahmed Mujuthaba and Board Member, Maldives Association of Tourism Industry.

Mr. Vaidya while thanking the Excellency apprised him that we have recently amended SAARC CCI constitution to broad the scope of the institution to make it true representative of private sector of South Asia. He elaborated that now two associate members can join SAARC CCI platform in addition to primary member which is MNCCI in case of Maldives.

Mr. Vaidya said that today he is here to seek the guidance to unleash the potential of South Asian Tourism.  He added that we are amazed to see the way tourism become the major organ of Maldives economy and would like to learn your experience. We South Asian countries have lot of untapped tourism potential which can become major organ of our economies.  He said that wings of India are spread beyond South Asian border and almost connecting to every South Asian countries. He was of the opinion that one pattern of EU why we cannot have a ferry service between India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Maldives which will also help to brand SAARC as well. He briefed H. E about sideline activities of SAARC CCI at the occasion 19th SAARC summit and invited Excellency to lead a sizable delegation from Maldives.  He also shared his vision about cross border investment.

While responding to Mr. Vaidya remarks, His Excellency extended warm welcome to the delegation to MATI and in Maldives.  Recalling the old memories he said the earlier there was no chamber in MNCCI, only Trader Association exists. However when Mr. Qasim Ibrahim came to know that the next term of SAARC CCI Presidency is from Maldives, we worked for formation of MNCCI and get it approved. Then Mr. Ibrahim becomes first President of SAARC CCI from Maldives. He added that South Asian countries are least integrated region despite its close proximity.  He added that recently only from China we succeeded in attracting four hundred thousand tourists and very limited from India only because of connectivity issues.  However lot of Indian business people visit male for business purpose.  He said that we should adopt a combine tourism strategy if we really want to unleash tourism in South Asian countries.  He said we had lost and still loosing many opportunities because of logistic and connectivity problems.
 
He welcomed the amendments in SAARC CCI constitution and added that it will help institution to address untapped potential of South Asia through expansion its horizons.  

The SAARC CCI delegation was comprises of Mr. Om Raj Bhandari, Vice President (Nepal), Mr. Ahmed Mujuthaba, Former Snr. Vice President, Maldives and Life Member, SAARC CCI and Mr. Zulfiqar Ali Butt, Deputy Secretary General, SAARC CCI.
